HARRIETT JAY’S WILL
The Stage (9 March, 1933 - p.4) Miss Harriett Jay, of The Cottage, 20, Seymour Gardens, Ilford, who, under the pen-name of Charles Marlowe, wrote “When Knights Were Bold,” and who died on December 21 last, left £4,041 gross, with net personalty £4,039. She left her house on trust to permit her cook, Mary Barber, and her housekeeper, Rose Barber, or the survivor of them, to live there. The will continues:—“I give my dog Peter to Mary Barber, and I direct my trustees to set aside sufficient capital to provide the sum of 30s. per week for the maintenance of the said dog during his life.” The rights to “When Knights Were Bold” she bequeathed to Mr. William Paul Jay, trustee |
I did contact the National Portrait Gallery to see if they still have Harriett Jay’s ‘large portrait of Mr. Robert Buchanan’ and received the following reply from Assistant Curator, Ruth Kenny: “The portrait in question is actually a large photograph. There is a letter to William Jay dated 12 Sept 1933 in Icon notes accepting it for the reference collection (deposit no 1045, now x11853). It is now listed as being in Large Portfolios and is catalogued as a sepia carbon print by an unknown photographer. The Archive sitter box shows, however, that it must by Barraud as it is identical to Ax27632, c. 1893, included in Men and Women of the Day.” I believe the photograph is the one on the home page of this site. _____
